Trump signs proclamation recognizing Israeli sovereignty on Golan

March 25, 2019

Today, President Trump officially recognized the Golan Heights as an essential part of Israel. In the press interview, he said that it's a strategic location for Israeli security, especially when defending against rocket attacks from Hamas and other terror groups. This is the same Golan Heights that holds a massive reserve of oil and natural gas, resources which all the surrounding nations (especially Russia) have a growing need to acquire.

Israel captured the Golan territory from Syria in the Six Day War of 1967. Despite this, Israel's ownership over the Golan has been denied under international law and has been long been considered an Israeli-occupied land belonging to Syria. Trump is the first world leader to acknowledge it as a part of historical Israel.
